Spuds in sacks

B3B3 Posts: 27,503

I have some old post bags. They're made of some fairly loosely sea woven plasticky stuff. They are about 2ft in diameter -maybe a bit more, and about 4ft high.

I was thinking of using them to grow potatoes but I have several questions:

How much soil do I  put in initially?

How deep into the soil should I plant them?

How many and is it just one layer?

Do I roll down the sides?

Where should I put the sack - Sun or shade?

When I earth them up, do I just leave a few leaves poking out?

Should I worry about light getting through the sides of the sack?

PHEW - I think that's just about covered it!

Any advice would be appreciated

If you can see light through them I wouldn't use them, when you try to water them it will come out of the sides. I've used old compost bagsimage If you use them make a few holes in the bottom put about 5 inches of compost in put 3 potatoes in cover them with compost and about 5in on top.But I think it's a bit early yetimage

I think I'll try both types p 2. I have plenty of compost so I can see which works the best
