Just googled it Cathy, looks lovely, thanks for the tip.  I have a lovely winter honeysuckle that's been in flower for months.  Sarcoccoca about to flower and camelias in bud.  Been looking for a spot to put winter hazel for ages but having trouble finding the right place.

Edgeworthia is a bit borderline hardy here.

Cornus mas is looking as good as ever, a tree in theory but looks like a shrub to me.

And at £44.95 for a small one, Edgeworthia is a bit pricey for us, as well as being too tender.

    Thanks Verdun

Am I right in think witch hazels aren't going to thrive in my dry alkalinity?

Looking back some 25 years, I think that's why I chose the cornus over the hamamelis.image

Dry in the west may not be as dry as East Anglia though Verdun. We are DRYimage

Lovely to look at but I think I'll stick with the cornus
