I had a moment of weaknesss at the garden centre...

I saw this little beauty at the garden centre today and caved.

Having had a bit of success with hybrid phalaenopsis I should be able to keep this one alive.

It was sold as a 'wild orchid' so I would hope it was a species phalaenopsis rather than a hybrid.

Anyone have any idea as to which species

The flowers are less that an inch across, mainly white with flushes of pink when they firsst open. There are 9 flower stalks. The leaves are similar in shape, colour & size to your average supermarket hybrid. The flower stems grow upright without any need for support.

  • Thanks for the recommendation Tetley, I do love the expert books image

I'm not sure a big national chain counts as reputable. I'm not sure I have ever been to a reputable gc that sells orchids. The most I have ever seen on an orchid is the genus and thats normally easy to work out.

Verdun, I dare you: when I'm in Cornwall in June, we'll go to Burncoose Nurseries together and see who comes out with fewer things!

Rainbowfish, it looks like a "standard" phalaenopsis, perhaps the "wild" bit relates to its temperment! Be carefull perhaps it eats human flesh! Seriously, though, I have about 25 orchids, by the time the flower spikes get to about 10 inches tall, I have to attach them to stick otherwise I have had them snap off under their own weight.
