Propageting

Daniel Haynes

I purchased this year several fusias eg Quasar, Bella Rosella, Bicentenial, Seventh Heaven and Voodoo and have had lovely flowers from all.  I would like to over-winter them with the geraniums that I have managed to save and achieved very good cutting .

I know it is early, but I want to plan the space I will need as I will have to place them in an indoor non heated stairwell that has a good amount of light and although not heated stays failrly warm.  Also will my herbs keep too.  I have parsley both type curly and flat leaf, chives & basil.

Your advice will be very much appreciated.

I can only answer the herbs part.

Parsley is a hardy biennial,  It can stay in the garden and will come up to flower next year and make seeds.

chives are hardy perennial bulbs, can stay in the garden and will come back next year.

Basil is a tender annual, it won't last over the winter so use it up and enjoy it.

Hi Daniel, the fuchsias will die back and lose all of their leaves and just look like a pot full of twigs - this is usual!  They'll be fine as long as it isn't too warm, mine live in a cold greenhouse all winter and regrow in spring.  Keep them on the dry side but don't let them dry out totally, I give mine a drop of water every month or so.  In spring cut them down to about an inch or so and start gentle watering and new shoots will grow. Put them outside once danger of frost has passed.

Now is a good time to take cuttings taken from non flowering shoots.strip them back to just two sets of leaves cut below a node and dip into rooting compound, this will help the rooting process and eliminate disease. another good point to make is that cuttings dont take up much space.
