I've just had a hedgehog rescued. I spotted it wandering out my carport towards the road.image I brought it back into the garden and contacted the local rescue people. Luckily there they had somebody a few minutes away who came to collect it. It was only about 4 inches long. I would have liked to keep it but haven't the time to care for it.

  • Well done Marygold.  You may be able to get him/her back. I took on 2 rescues last Easter. I committed to making sure there was fresh food and water out and my little group has grown from 1 to 10....my resident hog, 2 rescues, plus their 5 babies (3 currently being over-wintered at rescue centre as wouldn't have survived winter)  and 2 new adult hogs.

They do prefer to take them back where found so get in contact and keep an eye out as there will probably be more.

I will have to find out what happened to him. I often see the signs of hedgehogs in my garden in summer and found one asleep under a phlomis plant a couple of years ago but as I live by a busy road, I'm always afraid of what I might see. We do have some fields across the road, so this may be a better place for them.

Love hedgehogs, we have them in the garden & I think one is hibernating in our hedgehog house, but don't like to disturb him/her.

Signed, they need all the help they can get. In the meantime, people could put down (meat flavoured) a shallow bowl of water/cat or dog dry biscuits preferably in a hedgehog feeding station (google it) to stop foxes and cats.

are they out of hibernation now Mark? I'm never sure when to start.

Hostafan1: Some are already up and about (mine aren't) but because it's been a mild winter some haven't even hibernated. Also, you could begin putting food out now, it may draw new ones in that are desperate for a meal. image
