I'd try to get hold of some bulky organic material. Well rotted farmyard manure for example and work it into the soil before planting.

The roses in tubs will be fine a while longer and will thank you for the ground preparation.

...and then they'll do well in improved clay soil.  The like manure.  Find a local stables - they can't get rid of the stuff fast enough -  but make sure it's well-rotted.  And straw is much better than wood shavings.

What else are you going to grow?

...and welcome, by the way image

  • Roses and clay soil work well together, though as Steve says improving the soil is good! Clay soil holds onto nutrients. But yes, do get some improvement in, and then plant them out with a bit of rose fertiliser.

You don't say whereabouts you are - best to get the roses in before they put on much spring growth, I'd think, if they're outgrowing their tubs.

Thank you all, I will go to the local stables, compost bin now assembled so will put some in there too. I live in North herts so plants are beginning to grow now. It's lovely to be a member
