Dry garden

Two years ago my daughter moved house, the garden is surrounded by very tall trees, some conifers and some beech but all in neighbours gardens. The soil seems very light and dry. Last summer we tried various bedding plants, also some perennials but everything just grew leggy and was leaning towards to light.this year she has decided to lawn most of it and have narrow borders where she could plant some shrubs, so that she has a nice view from the kitchen, but what does she plant. At present there is an oil tank which is obscured by bamboo which she hates, so she wants to improve that area too. Some advice as to what plants would be happy in such an environment would be very much appreciated.

  • How big is the garden: what length and width, and which way does it face? How tall are the trees (house height, double house height?)

Thanks Verdun, that information and advice is very much appreciated. I did think the soil needed attention as it doesnt seem to have any 'body' in it and I'll check out those plant suggestions, there are some names new to me so that'll be interesting.

Joe, the garden is fairly small but I'm afraid i dont have the measurements, it faces south west and the trees, altho not in my daughters garden, are way above house height and do make the plants grow very spindly and tall, reaching for more light.
