What's eaten my cabbages

I've never grown cabbages before. Planted spring and winter ones and sprouting Broccoli. All were looking great, growing really well, then suddenly, the edges on some looked nibbled. I used slug pellets and also pest spray (although I did think it was a bit early for caterpillars etc).

I kept an eye on them but within a few days, the whole lot had been shredded. Could it have been pigeons, squirrels or hedgehogs? I live in a small town, so doubt it would be rabbits.

Very disappointed. If I replant next year, what should I use to maximise the growth Many thanks for any help.

  • Woodpigeons, without a shadow of doubt!  They are voracious once they find unprotected brassicas and invite all of their mates to the feast once they discover your plot.  I have to net all of my brassicas these days.  They will eat a row of freshly planted brassicas in minutes, leaving just the stalks.

Brassicas like high-nitrate feeds, so nettle tea, chicken pellets or growmore pellets if not bothered about being fully organic.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Oh thank you so much. Yes we do have quite a few as I feed the birds in the garden and have to keep moving the feeders to branches that the wood pigeons cannot get to. I'll definitely net them next time. x
