Purple sprouting brocoli

When and how is the best way to cut purple sprouting broccoli and does it keep producing sprouts of broccoli when you harvest it. Thanks

Just slice off the flower heads before they open with scissors/secateurs/sharp knife.  Cut a few inches behind the top, as the stems are q yummy as well.

Take off the large terminal infloresence first and the lateral buds will develop over the next week or three, then you can cut them.  And then smaller ones still.  Eventually there'll be none left, but by then you'll have the other spring crops coming through.

They go green when you cook them though - but still taste delicious - my favourite brassica.

  • As Steve says, just cut them off like this

It'll keep producing new sprouts until Easter at least if not longer.

Many years ago when I had an allotment we had the most horrendous winter, and many of the old allotmenteers' purple sprouting looked dead or dying so they pulled it up.  I had a young family and wasn't able to work on the allotment much in the winter and although I meant to pull it up I didn't get around to it  ......... by the time the village Spring Horticultural Show happened my broccoli had recovered and was producing a fantastic crop and it was the only broccoli in the village - mine was the only entry in the Broccoli Class in the show and I won first prize!!! image
