Pruning problems young espaliered apples
in Talkback
I pruned the lateral spurs to 3 buds in late August last year on my three 3 year old apple espaliers. The spurs have all grown into 3 to 4 foot whips. I didn't prune them at the end of last year as we had extremely warm mild weather and I was concerned they would simply regrow. Can I prune them now or will I lose all fruiting buds?

Thanks Verdun. I will probably remove them as you suggest.
I think part of the problem is my bad pruning last year. The diagrams for pruning always show small spurs with buds quite close to the junction. Cutting to 3 leaves/buds last year often meant the spur was in fact about 6inches or 10cm long. Should I have cut back closer to the maxin lateral?
Any help gratefully received.
