What to put instead of this grass strip?

Hi,
I am new to this forum so please go easy 
I have this strip of grass in the garden that just does not really grow grass. It runs along the fence.
Its constantly growing weeds and now has a number of ant hills. I would like to dig it all up and replace it with something nice to look and and kinda maintenance free.
Can anyone recommend anything in its place?

Hi Savgeax, is it in sun, what type of soil do you have etc? I'd remove the grass and create a border with low maintenance plants but type depends on soil, aspect etc.
You could grow espalier or cordon fruit trees on the fence
