Pimiento de Padron chilli seed germination
in Fruit & veg
Would anyone know whether Pimiento de Padron seeds are particularly difficult to germinate? It has been 2 weeks now and nothing has come up - 11 other chilli varieties have come up, or have started, but no sign of the padrons yet. They are probably the least hot of the lot too.
Everything in a simple propagator in the airing cupboard. Peat plugs.
Thanks!

New A, I don't know that variety but I sow mine in heated propagators at this time of year as most need a constant 15 -20C and light.
Maybe wait a while until you can provide daylight and a constant warm temperature.
I've never grown in peat plugs.
I'm no expert
Everything else has come up in the dark perfectly well. They go straight under some T5 grow lights after that - a great investment btw.
Perhaps I will pop a handful of padrons in a plastic bag and put them under the lights to see if it makes any difference. I'm sure they will germinate but I am surprised that the 350k scoville chillis have all germinated but the tame padrons haven't.
Tapas fan, New AIlotmenteer?
I doubt there's any reason for Padrons being harder to germinate than other varieties. More likely to be something like old seeds, or a duff batch maybe. Did you get them at the same or different time and place to your other varieties?
The only other things I can suggest are a heated propagator or heat mat, pre-soaking the seeds, or trying to germinate in a warm place on a damp paper towel.
It sounds like you know what you're doing and have had success with the other varieties. Full list please
This is a long thread to read through but as Stacey is our Chilli guru I suggest you just read her posts.

Hi Chris,
They're mostly new from the South Devon Chilli Farm (inc the padrons). I had a poke about this morning in a padron plug and the seeds had swelled a fair bit so hopefully not long now.
the list: twilight, hot wax, ring of fire, golden cayenne, joe's long, paper lantern, purple jalapeno, hot jalapeno, hot cayenne, scotch bonnet, padron(?). Hoping to get 5 of each and 10 of the padrons (big tapas fan). Planning on growing in a large polytunnel.
Kef - v good thread, thanks.
Nice list, N.A. I'm growing a similar mix.
South Devon Chilli Farm seem pretty good, and they're unusual in not charging p&p for seed orders.
We've been growing Padrons for a few years. We germinate in our unheated greenhouse, and don't normally start them going till Mar/Apr. Last year they were much slower to germinate than our sweet peppers, and took longer to establish. I believe they do need light as well as heat. Don't be fooled into thinking they are not hot, if you leave them on the plants for long enough they are very hot. We like them relatively small, although it's still a lottery which ones will burn your mouth.
