Climber for a cotoneaster

Hi all I have a huge cotoneaster in my garden I want to plant something that will make it a bit more interesting and something that will grow quickly and flower for a long time preferably with a fantastic scent that will fill my small garden. It's too big to remove and the area the new plant will be planted is quite shady at the roots

Clematis jumps to mind Kieran, you could plant two different varieties and by the time the cotoneaster is in berry, the clematis will have died back. There are quite a few scented types.

I have honeysuckle growing through some of mine I think it would be okay so long as the stems have some sun. image

  • Don't try to plant your climber directly against the cotoneaster - plant it a few feet away and train it towards the shrub.  image
