  • To all in response to climbing beans I say thank you all Yes Steve 30 9 you are on the same wave length as myself   As I've mentioned before my garden is small in 2 pieces 1@170sqft 1@150sqft  so Dovefromabove  if planting beans it's the norm to space about 9in apart  rows 9/12in apart  beans especially runners need water to produce a good crop so by watering in middle of the two rows job done   as i previously said I've been growing beans for many years long before  computers came about  I can see if one had the space arches would not only look nice but would be also be practical

  • hi again cjwp       whatever you do with your canes  do what a v/old gardener told me  to many years ago with your canes  get some old hosepipe about 12inch/18 inch push them to a tight fit on bottom of cane till you can go no more when you push in ground last for years  Michael

Canes wouldn't be strong enough here, I grow my beans in one long row, using  4 x4" wood stakes either end and scaffold poles in the middle. Sheep wire across the lot. But then I only grow 50 plants.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
