Heat mat or electric propagator

I have a small heated propagator (room for 2 seed trays), but wondered if I should invest in a heat mat - some are quite large - but they only heat from the bottom of the trays and the propagator keeps the whole area warm - any suggestions or preferences?

I guess it depends just how much you grow that requires heat.  You could always put seed trays with lids on top of the heated mat to get the same effect of keeping the whole area warm.

  • I have a heated mat with thermostat, its a mid size one with space for 2 full size seed trays. I find it invaluable this time of year and into spring, just put clear lids on the trays and works just like a heated propagator does. Its bottom heat the seeds need

I have one with room for 4 trays, it's great. It's in the greenhouse and with that and 3 heated propagators it helps keep the frost at bay too. Then when the seedlings are potted on if a cold night is forecast the pots of the more tender plants can sit on the mat.
