chilli seed

I have 1 chilli plant left from last year and I still using the chillies. I notice the seed is turning brown. Would it be worth sowing the seed instead of buying a fresh packet. I only want to grow 4 plants! Many thanks, Mags

Was the plant F1? If so the seed will not come true. Did you grow several varieties or species? They tend to cross easily. Otherwise if the pod was ripe, the seed should be fresh and hence good. It is a tad early to grow Capsicum annuum, but try a few seeds, see if they germinate.
I always use seeds from a red pepper from shop. I find they germinate very quickly straight from plant to compost.

The are not F1. If I pick a ripe-shrivelling pod should I do anything special with the seed before sowing? (ie expose it to dry out),
I always start my chillies mid-Feb and keep on kitchen window sill until May. .They always grow well, I just thought I could save the cost of fresh seed every year when I only use 4 or 5 seed out of the pack

Staff: I've been told to soak my chilli seeds in cold black tea overnight before planting them (seems to help with germination rates) so get them planted: what have you got to loose? I am using seeds of plants of seeds of plants for three generations back.
I always find chilli plants takes ages from seed. Is now the right time to get them going?
All chilli seedlings are slow to take off. They do need a long growing season so I sow mine in a bog standard heated proporgator on the first of January each year then bring them on in a large, clear, lidded container next to a south facing window. Even now they are only about 1 inch tall but come the spring they will take off.
Thanks all. I know to be patient about germination. I will sow a few this afternoon and soak some in tea tonight! (never heard of that tip). I always sow into compost warmed slightly (in the microwave).
