Tried David Austin climbing roses, very healthy and problem free. But be aware that they may not be fragrant in the first year (I found this out last year when I purchased 2)
James - I think pansyface requested a bit more info because it helps to know what soil you have, what aspect, what dimensions the pergola is ( I had a friend with one twenty feet long) and what other planting/structures etc are around the area. That has an impact on what suggestions are made.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
