Mid october now and I need to move two David Austin roses that are lost where they are. Also a Schoolgirl rose that I have had for years .It keeps trying, but never gets more than a twig with 3 leaves, poor thing. If I use a mycorrhizal like the RHS growmore, can I do it now??
I have a purple rose which is doing well but i want to move it in the next few weeks as i need the space for a tulip bed.
I'm not sure if this is a good time, but the flowering is complete and it would be dormant soon if not already dormant. So I'm guessing it is safe to move in Nov.
Since I need to plant tulips, I cannot wait till beyond Nov anyway. Not sure if that helps you Ann, but hopefully someone else can confirm.
Roses transplant really well. I've even seen one moved in full growth in summer, though it was agony to watch--but the plant survived and seemed perfectly happy. Just make sure you dig out plenty of the root, replant at the same depth, and then prune back well so there's not too much top growth. Verdun's instructions are great, the mycorrhizal powder will help. It will take a year for the plant to really get re-established but then you'll have great performance.
Thankyou for that. Job is done, the rootball on one was miniscule, so I am hoping the mycorrhizal powder will improve that in its new position. They are both now ensconced where my Dahlias normally live, so I will have a conundrum in spring as to where to re-house those! I have included some 2 year old leaf mould in the planting holes as well as the powder so I am really hoping to have some decent roses eventually.

Decided to go ahead anyway. They are miserable where they are, so not much to lose really.
Good luck. Roses are tough plants so I am sure they will recover. I'll be moving mine over the weekend.
