Too soon to Prune Roses?

  • Thank you all so much for the advice. I will make a start as I have quite a lot of roses.  Anyone have any thoughts on my horse manure query?

I always finish the pruning in late autumn since I want the roses to look tidy and also I feel they will have a better start in spring because all the growth hormones are accumulating at the right top end rather than being wasted.

But maybe I just have got the toughest roses in the garden ha. image

  • I was going to say the same as Hortico, we were told the exact same things when I did the RHS course at Capel manor. They also work with Regents park & they do the same otherwise they would never get it done. Some would say that if you are doing the  Autumn trim to stop wind rock you may as well do the whole pruning while you are at it.

If you are putting the Manure on as a mulch it is probably ok if its been lying out. Use any fresh material to "activate" your compost heap- mix it in well you will get great compost.

I've just got to my Mum's in north London.  Her few roses haven't yet been pruned and have plenty of new growth.  Is it OK to do them now-ish?

And am I right, that to make the bushes grow bigger I should take off only 1/3 of each stem?  And feed, also nowish.
