Disinfecting terracotta pots

Several of my container-grown Dahlias developed a crown gall last year. Following advice on RHS site, I disposed of plants and compost, but haven't cleaned the pots yet.

I know many people would recommend using Jeyes Fluid, but I absolutely hate the stuff! It smells vile and the only time I used it to clean plastic pots and trays, it left a greasy, oily sheen on everything.

I've seen a product called Citrox online. Can anyone recommend this, or suggest another, effective way of disinfecting the pots?

You might try another disinfectant - Dettol or own-brand equivalent; diluted bleach etc.  Or is there something special about Jeyes Fluid for garden use?

I have to say, I've never bothered, meself.

...or boiling water alone, come to that, if the pot survives.

  • Thanks Steve and Tetley. I did wonder whether a household disinfectant like Dettox would do the job, but was a bit worried that it might leave a residue that affected later occupants of the pot.

Steve - all the Jeyes range is intended for outdoor use - but I think its downright evil.

Tetley - would that be fish 'n' chip or white vinegar?
