David, those were the days my frIend I thought they would never end? Then all things end and some nut invented the three chord catterwailing and music exists only in the memory of us old lags. You could dance to my music David as my children and grandchildren are finding out, we all have record players, ours is blue tooth and masses of old discs have been dusted and played. Apart from one i have hidden, The Bay City Rollers, my daughters listened to some right rubbish.
David, it is all to do with what you heard when young. My Dad was a light opera buff, I heard Vilja and Vien on a daily basis, we went to every musical film and the music halls, we had two where singers made up half the cast, your ears become tuned to it. Garrison theatres put on weekly shows with most of the talent coming from the troops some were brilliant. Our children started buying thier own records, luckily we had a big house so could escape the racket, it was quite ear hurting to me who played music as well, yet party times it was get the acordion out dad and they sang along with the rest of us. Now dancing, listening to old discs, hope for them yet.
KEF, loved Gigli and saw him in film some time before he died in the 50's. I have a recording of "Vieni Sul mar" come to the sea which when I play it reminds me of the song Two Lovely Black eye's although the song itself is an old Italian folk song. There is a U Tube version with Pavarotti singing it. I had Richard Tauber singing in my ears when Dad came in from the garden for a rest. In those days learning piano you played mainly classical so when Dad brought the music for "Tales from the Vienna Woods" you can understand what an eye opener that was, still play it the odd times I still practice and still love it.
Have both on LP dusted off and played on my blue tooth Bose, who would have thought that all those years back when they were acquired. I was a bit of a rebel on the piano and could belt out all the Glen Miller stuff on the piano but not at home, Dad thought it cr@p though mother would get me to play when he was out and dance her socks off. In the mood, sentemental journey and dont go under the apple tree are my warm up practice still. In the mood got me many a free pint and a few secret kisses, as I said David those were the days!

Frank, with respect there was probably more rubbish 'music' around in those early days (could name some) than there is today.
For myself, I try to be flexible and enjoy music from across the spectrum.

The images are perfect inspiration for gardeners on a February day with gale force winds lashing the windows with rain.
