Sweet peas, lobelia (indoors, need warmth) and broad beans. A lot of plants prefer waiting until March, longer daylight hours, weather getting warmer (hopefully).

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Now is the best time to plant snowdrops in the green. They are cheapest bought bare rooted online.

You can plant hardy shrubs now and roses.

How much room do you have and do you plan to grow in pots or beds...
  • Hi Thank you all for your comments they are appreciated. Zoomer44 i have quite a big garden so plenty of room to grow anything, so preferably would be planting in beds or raised beds, Thanks

  • Thank you Verdun, I will give those a try, Cheers for taking the time

  • Terry, where are you in the country?  That will determine how soon you can sow seeds.  The soil needs to be warm enough or they won't germinate - I have a shady garden in west Yorks and can't reliably sow until March at the earliest.

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

Hi Terry, and welcome to the madhouse.image

If you're keen on trying veg I'd suggest potatoes, broad beans and beetroot as all being pretty easy for a start, as well as delicious.

You can sow the broad beans (The Sutton or Bunyard's Exhibition are good standard varieties, but there are many others) as soon as the soil is less sodden than it probably is now.  Sow some beetroot (Boltardy or Detroit Globe) in March and then a few every fortnight till August; plant spuds at the end of March.  But get hold of seed potatoes now and put them in egg boxes on a cool windowsill or frost-free shed (they need light but no frost) to start sprouting.

What sort of soil do you have?  Where in the country (world?) are you?
