Using moss as compost

Hi All,

I spent a productive Saturday dragging mossy sludge off our garage roof. I now have three large buckets of the stuff- deep brown and well rotted following all the rain this winter.

I don't relish the idea of transporting it to the tip, and that feels like a waste in any case. We have a big herb bed in our garden and an allotment nearby- would this stuff be good for the soil or am I lining myself up for problems if I dig it into my beds?

Any advice gratefully received!

Adam

I'd add it to the compost bin for a while.

i thought i'd read that you shouldn't put moss in compost bin? fab if this isnt the case as means when i hoover my mossy lawn i can put the cuttings in my compost rather than the brown bin.

could someone confirm this for me.  thanks

I put pretty much everything in mine, except bindweed and ground elder roots.

If you've just scarified a lawn and have masses of moss / thatch, I'd keep it in a seperate pile and add over time in layers with other material.

great to know, thank you Hostafan.imageimage

  • The only time I wouldn't put moss in the compost bin is if it had been raked out of a lawn which had recently been treated with a Weed,Feed & Mosskiller.

At this time of year I rake a few handfuls of moss out of the lawn, bundle it up and tie it to the hedge or fence for the birds to help themselves from when nestbuilding.  image

wise words as ever Dove, I never use the weed/ feed stuff, so tend to forget about them.
