In general, the really strong scented ones such as Lathyrus 'Matucana' are directly decended form the wild form so have small flowers. Those are usually labelled as heirloom types. You probably want to grow some of those and some of the modern hybrids so you get the larger flowers that we are now all accustomed to.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
I've grown both Matucana and Cupani and last year on the advice from my Daughter, I decided to grow something different.
April In Paris, white with lilac edging and the most delicious scent. I picked them every week and they grew to be strong sturdy plants with lots of flower stems on them. I grew them from seed bought from Sarah Raven and can't say enough good things about them.

I liked the smell of cupani, nice colour as well.

Cupani for me too Perki
They're one of the original sweet peas Robert - small and beautiful
I've also found Cathy has a terrific scent - it's a cream but a little muddy. Beautiful big blooms and weather resistant
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I've just bought Juliet, a cream described as having a 'strong scent with a hint of citrus'.
I'll let you know how that works out!
