Conifer problem

I have a lot of conifers that provide privacy and a noise barrier from main road that are dying. Are there any shrubs that I can start to plant that can then take over so that I can remove conifers or is there an instant replacement I could put up for the noise and privacy as if we were to remove them neighbours Windows would overlook our garden

You will need to remove the conifers first, then enrich the ground as they will have drained it of nutrients. Laurel is the quickest to form a hedge, but not very pretty, (it's a good protection for nesting birds, probably won't apply to road side hedge anyway) if you keep nipping out the tops it will grow thick from the bottom, it will still take a few years to reach a good size though.

Mine was planted as 18/24" bare root plants, four years ago, coming up 5 now, it's cut every year and now very thick and dense at about 5/6'
