Shallot seeds

Hiya All,

I am growing shallots from seed for the first time this year, they are the banana type and they are growing well.

My daft question is do they only produce 1 bulb this year and if a bulb is planted next year will they multiply like the shallots I have grown from sets before?

  • Yes, I think that's what will happen.  If you grow plenty so you eat the majority of single bulbs but keep a few for next year, you'll effectively have your own sets which will split and produce the usual 6-10 bulbs per plant, next year.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Not if they are 'zebrune' (or the red version Simiane). These are a shallot/onion hybrid which can only be grown from seed (not sets) and will not multiply like true shallots.

  • Hi

I grow shallot sets which multiply into many shallots come August however Zebrune shallot seed are grown single but they are worth the time And are excellent and keep well
