I hardly saw a bird today, but didn't have time to do the birdwatch, which is just as well. I did spend about 20 minutes looking out while I had a chance, and saw a grand total of 1 bluetit, 1 robin and 1 dunnock. Weather's due to be wet tomorrow and I'm unlikely to have an hour at the 'best' times of day, but here's hoping...

I could have counted the 2000 + starlings that were in the field this morning, but then they swarmed off up to the top field, now it will be noted that starlings are in decline in the West Devon area.

If you only list them as you see then in one hour, i can't see how they can get  a true reading.

  • I agree Lyn, how can what happens to land land in your garden be used to guage the true wildlife for your area? If I look out from my windows (esp upstairs) not only do  I get a birdseye view (image) of my garden but also that of the allotments behind and the woodlands and farmland that surround us. As we only have one other house nearby surely a wider area to include in the count would be better.

  • i am envious of anyone who says that they saw one bluetit. We still don't have any birds around our new build. image Seems pointless to fill out a form.

I am hoping some are going to appear in the spring/summer with the wildlife friendly plants.

I have put out great bird food but ended up binning it as it never got touched, went a bit yuck after a couple of weeks outside image

  • I don't think it has anything to do with declining bird species. I think it is mainly that the gardens around us have nowhere for them to hide, no shrubs or trees, just overgrown turf.

  • I have just seen that RSPB have put up a webcam for us to watch, and also an hour of birdsong to listen to.   Lovely!   The rabbits are enjoying themselves on the webcam!

  • I did my bird watch as I ate my lunch and had, 2 Blue tits, 1 great tit, 4 goldfinches and a wren, typically the robin turns up just afterwards and a no show for the blackbirds and woode pigeons.

Rainbow fish if you hang sunflower hearts, the birds will get used to seeing a bird feeder and then start visiting.when I moved into this house,a robin was only bird that visited.

I started hanging various types of feeders around the garden, and now I get a variety of birds.

    Give it time
