Miniature roses mildew and greenfly
I am a new gardener and I planted 5 miniature roses in my border in the summer which I got powdery mildew (I think as the leaves went grey and powdery in the autumn). I sprayed them with fungicide but noticed this week the leaves which haven't yet died back are still grey and there were greenfly on one if them as well. I decided to cut them all back to ground level in order to get rid of all the bad foliage and sprayed the remaining stems with fungicide and bug killer in the hope that they will grow back better in the spring. I since read that you shouldn't orune miniature roses very much so I am not sure if I have done the right thing or if I should just pull them up and plant new ones?? Any advice gratefully received!!

I've found that miniature roses don't live very long as they have been bred to give as presents or as house plants. The leaves would probably have fallen off when the new spring growth starts. Some plants get mildew when they have got too dry in the summer. Depends how badly you want to keep them. You could wait and see what happens in the spring. Patio roses, which are a bit bigger live longer. I don't think miniature roses are really bred for planting out in beds, better in pots and they may need a bit of winter protection.
