Can I use any type of worms to make compost? Where ls the best place to buy? I live in Worcestershire. How many would I need for a self built bin. 4ft x 4ft x 2ft. Thanks

  • If you want worms for an ordinary compost heap/bin, I wouldn't bother.     I have composted for more years than I can remember and they just appear in my bins.    I have never had to buy any.

Construct your bin on the earth - worms will find their own way there - I've got compost bins full of worms - I've never bought any.  If you want to hurry things up a bit go into the countryside and buy a bag of pony poo from the side of the road and add that to your compost.

I agree. As long as the bin is open to soil below, the worms will move in very quickly. don't waste your money buying any. If you really want to get it going, a forkful of compost from a neighbours bin will trigger it with a sample of all the beasties needed.

  • Thanks guys..I already have a normal one that sits in the ground..was going to try a worm one from what I've made. I will put it in the ground though. Thanks ..

A wormery is different to a compost bin - very different - have a good read through Edd's thread here http://www.gardenersworld.com/forum/talkback/vermicomposting-for-begginers/255110.html

I have a wormery from Wiggley Wiglers. You can just buy worms from them if you are making your own. I think the worms are called Tiger Worms.
