Bottom line...

Further to earlier posts, I'll shortly be planting ivy at the base of my clay bank which is topped by hazel bushes.

Bottom line (because I've read conflicting opinions on this)-- is the ivy likely to kill or seriously damage the hazel bushes?

Only if you let the ivy completely cover the hazel so no leaves can be seen. Ivy isn't parasitic and the aerial roots only cling to the tree, they don't feed from it.
