We are thinking of getting rid of the lei landi at the bottom of our garden as we are now getting to old to manage them, our problem is , Take them out all together ,cut down to about seven or eight foot and remove all branches and just use as posts for other things to grow up.they have been there for about 30 years so the earth round and about them will be useless the only thing to grow amongts them is Elderberry bushes. what should I do about this, thanks in avance

I don't think using them as posts ever looks good and they're not permanent, they'll rot and fall over eventually

Don't eve think the ground will be no good. We took out a 100' row of these Leylandii, been in for 28 years, saw them down leaving a short trunk for leverage then pick away with a mattock and an iron bar. You will need some heavy loppers for the big roots and secateurs for the smaller ones.
We then fed it with compost and chicken pellets, this was it just the following summer, if you have some man power there is no reason why you can't get them out and plant some nice shrubs and perenials,

once killed (all the branches cut off) it doesn't take long for the roots to rot down, maybe tow or three years and they'll snap off at the ground
