Hi April roseimage. The bush rose will need pruning every year - I normally wait til March and cut everything down by 2/3rds.  Climbers need less attention when you are getting them started - just remove anything dead, or that is obviously growing in the wrong direction for your framework.  In later years you might need to prune one or two of the stems harder to avoid getting all your flowers at the top of the plant.

I'm afraid I don't grow patio roses - but others will be along soon to help you out with thoseimage

Patio roses need little pruning other than taking out dead or damaged stems. The climber can be done now, but as its only a year old you need to train it first. You tie in the stems either laterally or at 45 degrees onto your framework. Take out anything dead or damaged at the same time. Bush roses are done in spring as chicky says, pruned back to 6 inches to an outward facing bud. You want an open framework for the bush rose bowl shaped. Again as they are only a year old it won't be difficult.

  • Thanks Dave, that's good to know.
