Cuttings

Hi. I've seen lots of sites giving advice about when is the best time to take dogwood cuttings - which I gather is autumn round to spring. However, looking at Joe Swift's video he says that the variety  "midwinter fire" is not as robust as the usual red stemmed ones so I'm wondering if they will root from cuttings as well. If so how and when?? Advice please.

They are very feeble compared to the red one, the low stems on mine layer themselves, Have you any that are low enough to layer?

Not really as my plants are quite new, but might be worth pegging a few down. Yes I got the impression they were a bit weak which is why I asked about cuttings.

I like layering, it always works, unlike cuttings (for me)image

Mine have never come from cuttings but they sucker like mad.  I moved one several years ago to a sunnier site where I wouldd get a better winter display from it and the next year dug up 12 new plants from the original site.

Its sister out the front has never been moved but yields new suckered babies every year.    I sell some at a charity plant fair in May and the rest go on the compost.

Yes, mine suckers, too and I have been able to take several really strong, well rooted pieces. Much easier than rooting cuttings.
