plants in dormitory

Hello everyone, I'm a Chinese undergraduate and l want to have some plants in my dormitory. It's cold and dry here. Besides, there are enough light in the balcony. Do you have some advice?

    I want inside plants more but the dormitory is a little dim. The sun doesn't exposure direct so we keep the lights on all the day. And l want small plants because l share the room with my roommate. I used to grow herbs but I think they are not suitable now. How about Aloes?????

    What about hidden gem lettuce? I heard Bob Flowerdue on GQT yesterday saying they do well, and you can eat them when leaves large enough.
