Which to move?

Hi all.  To cut a long story short, I have an established azalea bush in very close proximity to a small(ish) Olive tree that I managed to rescue.  One of them really needs moving, problem is, which one, and when.

Hi Chris, have you got any photos so we can see the sizes and proximity?

  • Thanks for replying.  Will send some tomorrow.

I'd choose the olive hands down. The azalea will have formed buds already, and if it gets really cold you may lose it. Olive trees need wrapping right now anyway. I don't know where you are in the country Chris, but I find they are better in pots for anywhere else other than the warmer parts of the UK.

  • Thanks everyone for the replies.  I've added a couple of photo's (hope the orientation is OK).  We live in north Yorkshire.

The Olive tree just seems to have shot up without us really noticing it.  Even though it is this size, do you advise "clear stemming" it, or leave it as it is?

Thanks for the photos Chris. I agree with Dave, the azalea would have buds and would be more susceptible to a move.  The olive looks as if it might outgrow (have outgrown?) the space anyway so perhaps a better position for it elsewhere in your garden would be good all round.  Good luck.

Don't forget to fleece it or bubble wrap it. It won't like this cold weather.

  • Thanks guys(gals?).

Would it be OK to move it into a large pot, that way I could move it into the garage when needed?  Your help is appreciated!!

Yes it'll be very happy in a large pot but (and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) I wouldn't put it in a dark garage.  Conservatory, greenhouse, coldframe or even a sheltered corner out of cold winds would be fine as it'll need the light.  Please don't be brutal if I'm wrong Verdunimage
