  • Might not give you the look you're after, but you could sow yellow rattle to inhibit the growth of the grass, and also sow other (short) wildflowers to grow up below and around the roses. Maybe some ones that attract ladybirds to keep the aphids under control? 

  • Add some other plants that will grow under the roses and take over from the grass, such as a very pretty clover.
