Apple/Roses for north east facing Garage Wall

Hi, Please have a look at the photo attached. I have got north east facing garage wall which is painted white new and i want to grow something on it. I have got two ideas

1. Apple tree - side growing apple tree which can be trained and it would look really good with shining apple tree bark with white background. Problem is that area don't get that much amount of sunlight so apple crop wont be that good.

2. Roses - I would like to go for climbing roses where roses can be trained on metal wire against the white wall. Same problem again as this area don't get that much sunlight.

Any advise/suggestions related to overall garden would be highly appreciate as i have moved to this house last year and just spent one summer sorting out the clay soil and all.

Most top fruit (apples, pears, plums etc.) won't do well facing north-east, Ankit as they need sunshine to ripen the fruit, as well as light for normal growth.  I dont know about roses, but I should think they'd be happier in the sun too.

Gooseberries are the traditional fruit for a shady corner, as they need less sun, being woodland plants originally.  However, you have a lot of space to filll there and unless you and all your family and friends are extraordinarily fond of gooseberry jam, you'll want something else too.

The fence on the right will presumably face south-west, which is ideal for apples and most other things too, so as long as you can avoid the shade cast by the garage you should do well there.  I'd go for cordons or espaliers on the fence, and strawberries in front.  But you might want pretty things too!

Roses like clay soil, as long as you get plenty of compost or manure into it as well.

  • Hi Tetley, hydrangea is wife's favourite so should not be a problem putting it there.

Steve, Thanks for the suggestions. As gardening is long term planning activity when it comes to tree and all so want to confirm what would be best before trying it and wasting couple of years perfecting that.

  • Hello Ankit. I envy you the beginnings of a new garden project, the planning, choices and the planting. Planting on a north facing garage in clay makes me ask: is the garage guttering sound so roof doesn't create puddles to plant in? If it isn't too soggy and the soil gets some organic matter dug in then a Mitre plant would like that aspect. M. Coccinea would look

Evergreen climber with red or orange trumpet flowers it would be quite happy, especially against a North facing white wall. HTH
  • PS Ooops! lost end of 1st paragraph.....should have been the Mitraria coccinea would look really good.
  • Thanks a lot Marinelilium for the suggestions. Garage just had a new roof so everything is sorted except the down pipe which after ur suggestion I am going to keep near the fence.

  • What about Jasmine climber?
