tulip tree

My tulip tree ( liriodenron)  flowered for the first time last year. I collected some seed and they are now in the bottom of the fridge as I read they have to have about 140 days chilling also that not many seeds are viable. Has anyone had success germinating them?

Have you put the seeds in the fridge with moist compost or something else?

140 days is a long time, do they come from an area that is cold for that long?

I haven't tried these so can't offer first hand advice. If they were mine I would have sown them and stood the pots outside with all the other chilling seeds. I have more success with that than with artificial chilling. I think the natural ups and downs of temperature play a part as well as the cold

  • Hi nutcutlet,

I was just following advice I read on internet. I put them in damp tissue paper in a sealed container. I think I'll do as you suggest and put some outside although in cornwall we don't get many frosts.

  • Just looked again and it is 90 days not 140 days

I find a lot of seeds germinate much more quickly if you save and sow them yourself. I assume they haven't gone completely dormant in that time, unlike a packet of seeds that would have to be completely dried before packeting
