Acers & Honeysuckle

Novice7Novice7 Posts: 56
Hello and a Happy New Year to all fellow gardeners, I have a lovely Acer and a Honeysuckle which are growing in pots, they both need a trim this year and I would like to know when to do this, I have read that it should be done between november and february after the frosts, but to date we have had no frosts in Lancashire UK, just RAIN RAIN and more RAIN, and hearing the weather forecast more RAIN to come. I know this needs to be done before they start budding but the weather has upset most of the plants cycles and they don't know if they are coming or going (so to speak) image Sue (sorry for long ramble)

I wouldn't do anything with either of them just yet. Cold weather will be here by Tuesday and after that forecast's are uncertain as to how long it will stay. I'd wait till April.

I was advised if Japanese maples need to be cut back ie the odd branch removed this should be done in the depth of winter ie Dec/Jan before the sap rises as they can bleed. I don't believe they need pruning as such. I'm waiting for this bliddy rain to stop here in the NE so I can get out and do mine.

Well my Acer and Honeysuckle have now got buds and leaves on respectively, have I missed to opportunity to trim them, or should I still wait (eager to get something done image)?

Also the Acer needs a new pot as it got damaged in transit (moved out of wind), would it still be okay to do?

    Thanks

I have been holding back trimming the plants/shrubs for a while now as I thought the weather was not suitable and your advise was hold on, but listening to the 'weather experts' they forecast a WHITE easter, so do I still hold on till after easter or get it done before ;(
