  • Thanks everybody . The dressing I used was a proprietary brand from a garden centre that have had for some time but kept in a plastic tub with a lid , kept dry and secure, and used without problem last year .

I did see some signs of leatherjackets earlier in the year and was my first suspicion .I will give the nematode treatment a try .

Thanks everybody who replied and will let you know how I get on .

  • Thanks Verdun , I picked up on the timing , Will do it about the end of August or even September . Its very mild down here , spring is early and autumn late . We often don't get a frost at all.

  • I have a similar problem in that many small patches of bare ground did not take kindly to re-seeding in Autumn and I am not sure that any similar attempt in the spring is going to help. Visited the RHS help desk which turned out to be a waste of time as it appears the appropriate person was not around.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Just an update . Due to the recent heavy rain , the ground is totaly waterlogged with standing water starting to show on the surface . There are what appear to be small leatherjackets climbing up my garage wall ! I have never seen anything like it before .

I'm wondering whether the decline in the number of starlings in the UK has something to do with the increasing prevalence of leatherjackets - they're currently on the RSPB Red List image

We have a few which nest under the tiles of next door's roof - I'm going to find an appropriate spot to site a few of these http://www.nestbox.co.uk/collections/bird-boxes/products/starling-box so that the little colony can grow a bit.
