Paul it sounds as if you are in Enfield/Hertfordshire, since you refer to Capel Manor. They are an excellent source of information and would have good knowledge of the local area - always a help!
It sounds as if you have a massive job on your hands. Nothing ventured, nothing gained - so how about publicity to recruit volunteers? Anyone with a spare fork or spade would probably be only to willing to help.
We always take photos of before and after to put on our website. I would be more than happy to show some and if we discover anything interesting.
The area has been approved by the council, they are very organised.
I did go to Capel Manor in Enfield. I live in Barnet which is not far away. This project is only a short drive away by car.
I was thinking about that but I am not quite sure how to recruit volunteers. We would only need volunteers who would assist in the first stage to help move any wildlife before any work was carried out.
As a gesture of good will we could donate some money to a local wildlife charity.
Hi Paul, sounds like a fantastic project! Gonna be a big job like you say.
Maybe a call for volunteers on local radio show? They would probably want to do a little interview but would be great exposure! plus inform the general public about wildlife at the same time!
Thats a good idea, St Albans have a local radio station I think. I can soon find out. Yes the exposure would be beneficial for promoting protecting wildlife. We actually work at two schools in Hertfordshire, I have been meaning to contact them about us coming in for a day and talking to the children about wildlife and how important it is.
Lots to do I came on this forum not really sure how to go about this, but I am now full of ideas
Oh Aster2, you took the words right out from my mouth! Was also going to say, why clear then add wild life area, but as you say Paul (Anderson) we havent seen the area, awaiting pics with great interest (and just a little jealousy!!!) Not on such a great scale admitted, 25 years (crikey where did that go!) We had a local authority 1930s cottage, with not far off quarter acre garden, overgrown wasnt the word,. We lived there 6 weeks before even going down the garden it was physically impossible. Because of brambles, trees, rubbish, large bits of wood, trees, shrubs. We found an anderson shelter, car bonnet, pots, pans, crockery, then pond, beds surrounded by little paths.

Check with the Council. With luck they will have no objection.

I have been meaning to join them for months. I can kill two birds with one stone.

Yup, Radio Verulam. They did a broadcast from a local plant nursery this autumn, so they are bound to be interested.
