Can anyone identify the pale leaved trees in the foreground at 29.40 minutes (bbciplayer)? I think they're gorgeous image

My first impression was that they were Pyrus salicifolia 'pendula', the silver leafed pear, which is a very hardy tree.

  • P. salicifolia doesn't grow that big; I'm not sure what this tree is though. I would go for a poplar. Where is W&P filmed?

It was filmed in St Petersburg, Russia.   The parent plant Pyrus salicifolia originates from Russia and I wouldn't say that a tree capable of 20-30 foot was not big enough for what we saw there.   However, it's just a guess.

  • Well whatever it is it must be hardy to live in Russia, I've googled the trees you have all mentioned and I'm not sure but they are all lovely, it's the silvery leaves, especially the pear, thanks allimage

  • Don't they realise that we do this as well?
