Ash Tree Cut Down Technique

Hi All,

I Have an Ash tree 1 meter from the corner of my house.

I want to cut the tree down and remove the stump and roots but I have heard that when removing a tree the roots can collapse and with the tree being this close to the house it could affect the structure of the building.

The tree is way over 26 years old (probably closer to 50 years) and is 1.5 meters in diameter and roughly 15 meters in tall.

I have spoken to a few tree surgeons and they have all said it would be fine, however they have also all said they refuse liability if the removal of the tree did affect the house.

Any advice, suggestions or stories of experience would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Not being funny but are the tree surgeons you've spoken to fully qualified arborculturalists?  Like Pansy - I wouldn't expect any tree surgeon to guarantee their work won't eventually affect your house - but you want to make sure the advice you're getting is from the best people out there.

I would also have a chat with your house insurers. They have an interest to get a job like this done properly and may be able to advise some good people to get in touch with - including specialist surveyors.

Perhaps taking the tree down, grinding the sump and main roots out and replacing them with soil which is then tamped down firmly?  But as Topbird says, you need a fully qualified arboriculturist to advise, along with a specialist surveyor.

It's a shame the tree was allowed to grow there - I love ash trees but they're not suitable for growing anywhere near a building.  image
