Think that looks like vine weevil damage - done by the adults - nothing you can do about it at this time of year other than to go out in the evening and look for the little beggars and squidge them. They hide under the leaves.
When the soil temperatures warm up you can water vine weevil nematodes onto the soil in that area - that'll kill off the larvae so they can't grow into the next generation.
It worked well in our garden.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I use a watering can with a fine sprinkling rose on the spout.
If you're not able to squidge things, then encourage birds and hedgehogs to root around in the area by sprinkling some suet sprinkles around there. They'll eat adult vine weevils.

ooh I love that idea, Dove thank you. Would squirrels eat them too, it will be a battle as to who gets to the food first but I will certainly give that a try.

eeww I'm really squeamish and can't squidge things. Might have to look at an alternative. Will they be active in this kind of weather ?
I will look at nematodes, thank you.
I've purchased nematodes before but then realised I don't have the correct equipment. What equipment do you use to spray it ?
Thank you Dove.
