Black currant - no fruit
in Fruit & veg
Planted new black & red currant plants this year. When planted each plant had 3 bare pruned stalks 9 inches long- from these each have grown two new canes - all are plenty long but no flower therefore no fruit, just leaves!! Is this the norm for these currants?

You may get currants on the new stalks next year, but usually they take a couple of years before you start to get fruit. then expect about 3 kg fruit per bush for 30 years or so.
Yes, they flower on the growth they made last year. So next year you can look forward to a modest crop, providing you keep the blackbirds off them
i'll be back after my bumper crop next year to investigate the pruning!! I'm sold on the pie and cream Mmmmmmmmm its gonna be a long wait :0) hungry now!
