December sprouting?

Hi there,

I live in the South of England where the balmy English weather is seriously confusing the garden. I planted my bulbs at the end of October to harden over winter but the mild temperatures have led to my bulbs sprouting, they are now a good 6 inches tall. If the temperature does decide to turn how can I protect them? It's a mixture of spring and summer bulbs.

Thanks.

They'll be fine Ree. Lots of people are having the same issue, but the bulbs will just slow down as it gets colder. The very mild spell of weather has led to a few odd happenings! Unfortunately there have been many cases of daffodils flowering which just means they won't flower at the usual time. It may be the case for a few other bulbs too.

Just enjoy them whenever they flower!  image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

On our local radio gardening show this morning, there was talk of a really cold February.

Who knows what it'll do, but lots of things in the garden definately seem to be out of kilter.

My garden most definitely needs a rest, the grass keeps growing and with all this rain it won't be getting cut anytime soon, so a cold spell would be welcome, I hope anyway...

Grass growing like mad, but so sodden! Bulbs way ahead of their time also I have a Tree Peony in a large pot... It has a flower bud! Not quite sure if  just to let nature take it's course or move it into a frost free greenhouse... Any advice?

I'm as confused as the plants. The most worrying part is getting new leaves and soft growth starting. When the cold does come this will be killed off, possibly damaging the plant. There isn't much I can do but I think anything vulnerable in a container could come into the greenhouse if the cold does come, Mollis.

ive heard that anything fruit that has flowers, like strawberry plants, should be dealt with by removing the flower and it will right itself later on. But flowers with buds should just be enjoyed, especially larger buds, as if they're removed you'll just lose the flower. Not sure if this is right though.
