Very patchy grass - what's wrong? (pics)

Back in the summer we decided to put some turf where previously there had been concrete slab. The concrete was broken up and skipped. This left the clay-type earth which we removed around 4 inches and put down high-quality top soil. The turf was then laid on top of this. Being summer we watered it a lot and it appeared to take quite well. Since then it has gone downhill. The biggest issue we contend with is two bitches who wee on it which we rinse with the hose if we notice. The issue is that the dogs also wee on the front lawn and it doesn't look anything like this. As the pictures show the grass is literally just disappearing and not coming back:

Could it be drainage issue? Water doesn't ever pool anywhere but I know clay earth can be a problem. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

  • Looks like a bit of thatch there too - I would scarify the lawn, prick it all over with a fork, going as deep as you can and then brush sharp sand into the holes, finally seeding the bare patches in early spring.

PS, the page looks fine here pansy, but I use an adblocker.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Thanks I shall try those suggestions. Should I expect the grass to get stronger next spring? Always assumed it would grow well from day one but most other plants only start to thrive in year 2 onwards.
