Help to identify plant with black berries

Hello,

We moved house earlier in the year, and I’m having fun (or not) trying to identify plants in the garden, but I'm struggling with this one.

It has black berries, and is around 12" tall.  I am assuming it is a shrub.

Can anyone assist?

Many thanks

Can anyone identify a good plant identification book?  I have loads, but I really struggle matching the photos to the actual plant!

    definitely hypericum chickyimage

species less sure, can't see the shape or the manner of growth but at 12 inches it's not one of the bigger shrubs.
