What is a wisteria side shoot?
In this week's to do list it says I have to prune shortening side shoots to 10-15 cm from their base.
We inherited a white wisteria up the outside wall (obviously) and I randomly cut off the long thin bits which bang on the lounge window or grab me round the throat. There are really thin stringy bits, they sort of curl round like tendrils and do what I just described, then there are thicker sort of stem things which lead off from a walloping great trunk up the middle... WHAT am I meant to be pruning exactly.. please?

Cut off all the fine whippy bits, back to a framework of the thick shoots. Leave two or three buds, they will flower.
Thank you - fantastic answer!
Trim the green, don't cut into brown is the simple rule with wisteria.
