Talkback: Is wood and coal ash safe for the garden?

I've been using wood ash on fruit plants for years and it works well. It is alkaline so is ideal for brassicas instead of liming.

I save up wood and printed cardboard over the summer and then burn them in the woodburner over the winter; I then mix the ash with home-made compost and mulch around the fruit bushes and flowering shrubs.

Absolutely.  The potash is good for fruit - I generally put some round soft fruit bushes in the early spring and cover it with a mulch of leaf mould.  If there's any left it goes on the apples.  Keep it dry in the meantime!

Coal (and to a lesser extent coke) ash is acidic, containing sulphur oxides which form sulphuric acid when dissoved and oxidised.  Avoid.
